The authors attempt to clarify the idea of use of self and explain how to use it in action. They explain use of self as “the conscious use of one’s whole being in the intentional execution of one’s role for effectiveness in whatever the current situation is presenting.” The authors suggest managing use of self through awareness and exploration of self as well as seeing, knowing, and doing.
- Seeing involves being aware of the context and taking in as much information as possible.
- Knowing is making sense of what information is collected while also considering external knowledge and internal understanding.
- Doing involves practitioners being aware of their choices of action and making decisions based on information collected and analyzed.
