At the 2017 annual American Educational Research Association (AERA) conference in San Antonio, TX, Division C – Learning and Instruction awarded EPIC’s Senior Lead Researcher Ross Anderson and his coauthor, Matthew Graham, the Outstanding Poster Award. Selected from more than 100 studies presented at the conference, their study focuses on how adaptive and maladaptive aspects of motivation and school engagement change during the transition to high school. The study also looks at the influence of motivation on student outcomes such as attendance and grade point average. Their results suggest that self-belief in being able to put forth effort and find success protects against disaffection and leads to higher performance.
