Jason McElwain Basketball Player with Autism

https://www.youtube.com/embed/1fw1CcxCUgg Jason McElwain, a student assistant for his high school’s basketball team, was given the opportunity to play during the last game of his senior year. During the game, he scored multiple three-pointers. He was supported by his team and the larger school community before and after the win. Questions:

  • The team and school community supported McElwain despite his differences. How can your school foster acceptance of and support for all students?
  • Where would McElwain have been without that acceptance and support?
  • What are values can students learn from their co-curricular experiences? How do you create an environment in which these values are promoted?
  • Have you ever had an experience when you believed in a student or provided them with an opportunity and they surprised you?
